We are excited to welcome back Avia Osigwe as she rejoins Douglas Law Firm as a lawyer!
Avia holds a Juris Doctor from Osgoode Hall Law School and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from York University. She previously worked with Douglas Law Firm as a law student and articling student and now practises exclusively in Family Law, where she assists clients in navigating complex and often deeply personal legal matters.
As a law student, Avia gained legal experience at Hicks Adams LLP and through Osgoode’s Intensive Program in Criminal Law, where she completed a student placement with the Toronto Crown Attorney’s Office at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Before entering the legal profession, Avia developed a strong client service and financial background at TD Canada Trust, where she held several roles, including Manager, Customer Experience. Her banking experience strengthened her financial literacy, problem-solving skills, and ability to explain complex issues in a clear and practical way–skills she now brings to her Family Law practice.
Although Avia initially entered law school with an interest in Criminal Law, she ultimately discovered that her strengths and interests were best suited to Family Law. She particularly values the opportunity to listen to each client’s circumstances, understand their perspective, and ensure their story is communicated effectively within the legal framework.
Avia’s longstanding interest in poetry and writing has also shaped her approach to advocacy. Storytelling has always come naturally to her, and she draws on that skill to identify the details that matter, organize complex facts into a clear and persuasive narrative, and develop strong and thoughtful legal arguments tailored to each client’s circumstances. She believes effective advocacy is not only about understanding the law, but also about presenting a client’s story in a way that clearly demonstrates how the law applies to their particular situation.
Avia also enjoys the relationship-building aspect of Family Law. She values being able to develop lasting relationships with clients while providing clear, practical solutions during some of the most challenging periods of their lives.
Avia has also been involved with the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) and Black Future Lawyers (BFL).
Outside of her professional life, Avia enjoys playing sports, going to the gym, and indulging her passion for beauty and self-care. She unwinds with crime shows and cherishes time with her family and friends, especially her role in caring for her younger siblings. Avia looks forward to continuing to grow her Family Law practice, developing her advocacy skills, and exploring new cultures through travel.
